Bradford Parish Church Graveyard Transcriptions, 2001

Were any of your ancestors buried at Bradford Parish Church? If so you may have looked for a memorial inscription in the Blackburn Registers*. But have you found the headstone? This new publication may help you to do just that because it contains maps showing the location of each headstone remaining today.

Many years ago most of the headstones in the graveyard at Bradford Parish Church, now the Cathedral, were laid horizontally in irregular plots, some having had corners taken off but others being split into two or more parts, partially destroying the inscription. Several are on footpaths and so can be walked on, thereby gradually abrading the surface. So before any further damage can befall the inscriptions they have been transcribed and a surname index provided.

Today's inscriptions have been compared with those recorded by Blackburn around 1930, and page and entry number in the Blackburn Registers are supplied. Also, the names given on the inscription have been checked with the Society publication, "Name Index to Bradford Parish Church Burials 1681-1837".

The publication, is available in both 68 page A5 book format and on 1 fiche.

* The Blackburn Registers. In the late 1920's and early 1930's Arthur Blackburn recorded, in over 100 volumes, the monumental inscriptions of graveyards, churchyards and cemeteries in and around Bradford. These have been indexed by Philip Rushworth, the founding chairman of Bradford F.H.S. Microfilm copies can be consulted at Bradford Central Library and can be borrowed through a Family History Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints, the Mormons.
